American Injustice: Mercy, Humanity and Making a Difference
Speaker: Bryan Stevenson

America has the largest prison population in the world – and the criminal justice system that puts the men, women, and children in these prisons is broken. Excessive punishment and abuse are widespread, and the collateral consequences are devastating lives and communities. An inspiring and unflinchingly honest speaker, Bryan Stevenson talks about defending some of America’s most rejected and marginalized people. The stories he tells are heartbreaking, yet inspiring, and motivate audiences to make a change.

Meet Bryan Stevenson:

Attorney, human rights activist, Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative, and author of Just Mercy

Bryan Stevenson is one of the country’s most visionary legal thinkers and social justice advocates. A MacArthur fellow and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, Stevenson is a founding leader of the movement against mass incarceration in the U.S. He recently served on President Obama’s task force on 21st-century policing.

Bryan Stevenson is the author of the recent New York Times bestseller, Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption. He was named by Time Magazine as one of the most influential people of 2015, made Fortune’s 2016 World’s Greatest Leaders list, and is the recipient of the MacArthur Foundation “Genius” grant.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu called Stevenson “America’s young Nelson Mandela.” Stevenson is a renowned, credible, talented speaker on issues of race, mass incarceration and our country’s broken justice system. Stevenson brings audience appeal with his strong, gifted communication style; his talks have been featured at Aspen Ideas, on National Public Radio, the 13th Netflix documentary, he was recently interviewed by Oprah Winfrey on the television show 60 Minutes. and his TED Talk has been viewed more than 4.8 million times.

Bryan Stevenson, and his staff of attorneys at EJI are leading the way in enacting laws eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing. Stevenson has successfully argued several cases in the United States Supreme Court and recently won a historic ruling that mandatory life-without-parole sentences for all children 17 or younger are unconstitutional.
