TRAUMA HEALING CONVENING SESSION

UNSTUCK: A Teen’s Guide to Living in Uncertain Times

February 7, 2024  |  9:00 am – 11:30 am

Location: Transform Minnesota

This Trauma Healing Convening Session is designed specifically for anyone who works with youth

In the face of life’s many uncertainties, today’s teens need real support to navigate challenges and find hope. UNSTUCK is a program developed by the American Bible Society’s Trauma Healing Institute to provide support for teens who are or have faced disruptive events – ranging from epidemics to displacement, and incidents of violence or abuse.

This convening session is designed for anyone who works with youth in any context and would benefit from this program’s aim – to provide spiritual care and emotional well-being to teens facing increasing anxiety about the world they live in.  Our time will be spent looking at the need for trauma healing in the church, how the Trauma Healing Initiative curriculum is responding, and what the commitment is when a church chooses to partner in this work.

“The combination of Biblical understanding and mental health best practices really made the Trauma Healing Institute training stand out as unique.” – Anonymous

RACHEL UTHMANN | TRAUMA HEALING FACILITATOR WITH THE AMERICAN BIBLE SOCIETY

Rachel’s 20 years of work with refugees and other displaced people in Europe and North America has given her a passion for caring well for people who have survived deep pain and loss. In search of tools for ministry, Rachel became a facilitator of the American Bible Society’s trauma healing program shortly after moving to the Twin Cities five years ago.

As she continues to put down roots in Minnesota, Rachel is eager to see churches and ministry leaders equipped to respond to the needs of our community. Rachel currently serves as the Director of Training with IAFR (International Association for Refugees) and is also the Trauma Healing Coordinator for the American Bible Society in the Twin Cities.

MARIA MATTHYS|TRAUMA HEALING FACILITATOR WITH THE AMERICAN BIBLE SOCIETY

Maria’s marriage has spanned over three decades, during which she has raised three young adults and enjoyed a 17-year career as an educator. Engaged in ministry for over 30 years in various capacities, she continues to work as a small group facilitator, offering support to adults facing challenges such as grief, trauma, abuse, financial struggles, parenting, and special needs education. Her roles extend to advocate, speaker, mentor, lay counselor, fundraiser, and world missions coordinator.

In youth and children’s ministry, Maria held multiple positions, including trainer, administrator, teacher, and leader. She concentrated on curriculum development, classroom management, and program oversight. Her most recent focus area has been educating churches on how to better support parents who have children and youth with emotional, mental, and developmental challenges. Beyond her professional life, Maria finds joy in learning, writing, exploring new places with her husband, and values candid conversations with sincere people. Her passions center around continuous personal and godly growth, cultivating a lovingly transformative culture within the Body of Christ, and building meaningful connections in Christian community.
