The Minnesota Elder Justice Center presents…
Elder Abuse, Neglect and Financial Exploitation
A Forum for Clergy and Lay Leaders
As we make our way in the twenty-first century, our communities and congregations are changing in many ways. Many of us will reach age 60, many will reach age 80, and many more will achieve ages in between or beyond.
As we experience this demographic change, there is an urgent need to plan for the prevention of elder abuse, neglect and financial exploitation. These crimes are significantly under reported, and have far-reaching impacts on victims and their families, friends and neighbors.
Faith community members, particularly clergy and lay leaders, are often the first line to intervene in abuse scenarios and hold a vital role in prevention and education.
This forum will explore prevention tools, warning signs and responses to the abuse, neglect and financial exploitation of older and vulnerable adults. We’ll review case studies, discuss how to overcome common reporting barriers, and review substitute decision making structures (like Power of Attorney) to allow for safe health and financial decisions within families.
We all benefit from coordinated community engagement and responses to elder abuse. Join us for this forum on prevention and intervention to keep your congregation a safer place for all!
