And read more on how some Lutherans and Catholics are responding to the NAE's new definition of evangelical, now that it is all based on beliefs, not behavior, denomination, race or political affiliation. It is very important for me personally to encourage non-Christians to trust Jesus Christ as their Savior. 3. Jesus Christ’s death on the cross is the only sacrifice that could remove the penalty of my sin. 4. Only those who trust in Jesus Christ alone as their Savior receive God’s free gift of eternal salvation.

He encourages us to pray like Nehemiah, be moved to tears like Nehemiah and intervene like Nehemiah; knowing there is hope in returning to the Almighty God.

With 36 million slaves in the world, 2 million women caught in sex trafficking, and corruption a common practice in many of the world’s court systems; it can be overwhelming for U.S. churches to look outside of themselves and care about global injustice. Read how some Twin Cities churches are taking innovative steps and doing the hard work of combating injustice in our world.

Sexuality and gender identity are important and critical issues our society is wrestling with in the public sphere. Today’s secular culture is dictating the narrative of what is sexually permissible, leaving the Church often timid when speaking about sexual orientation, gender dysphoria, and God’s design for holy sexuality. We believe the Church needs to root its response in the truth that male and female were created in God’s image. We believe the Church needs to offer a fulfilling, good, God-honoring vision of holy sexuality. In loving the whole person, the Church needs to be willing to accept the questions that come along with people struggling with their sexuality and identity.

Transform Minnesota is deeply saddened by the recent passing of our founding Executive Director Rev. Quinten Alfors. Quint’s leadership and faithfulness in prayer, was a driving force in the founding of this evangelical network, formerly called the Greater Minnesota Association of Evangelicals, which still exists 50 years later. God’s heart for justice and mercy is beating strongly here in the Twin Cities! The first Twin Cities Justice Weekend was a giant success. The president of the International Justice Mission (IJM) encouraged churches to seek justice as a calling from God. We learned that human trafficking is a money driven enterprise and the buyers are the fuel that keep it running, according to Sgt. Grant Snyder of the Minneapolis Police Department. Sgt. Snyder encouraged church leaders to address the problems of human trafficking by starting with the offenders, who are often men who attend our churches. Find out how Twin Cities churches can continue to be a part of the quest to end modern-day slavery. Let's not allow the momentum to slow down - Let justice roll on like a river!

We appeal to every church in Minnesota to address the deadly violence that has occurred in our nation this past week, including the tragic deaths of Philando Castile, Alton Sterling, a 2-year-old child in North Minneapolis and the deaths of 5 police officers in Dallas. Romans 12 commands us to “weep with those who weep,” and many people in our own state are weeping, whether they be the family and friends of young Black men, or the family and friends of police officers. Past experience has informed us that when churches have remained silent in moments like now, those who mourn are hurt by our silence when we do not grieve with them. For those Christians and church leaders who find themselves at a loss for words, we offer suggestions on how to address these events with your congregation, how to pray and respond, and what steps to take next. Together as the Body of Christ we must lament, pray for peace, and offer hope to the world.
It was standing room only at a community prayer service on Monday July 11, 2016, at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Minneapolis, in response to a week of deadly violence in our community and nation. Billy Russell of Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and Rev. Jason Meyer of Bethlehem Baptist Church called for a night of prayer and unity that resonated with many in our Christian community which can so often feel divided based on denomination, race, creed, age, gender or neighborhood affiliation.

Dr. Paul Eddy defines covenant as a committed, community-based, kinship-creating, agape love relationship. But he says it can be simplified down to two simple words: love formalized. Dr. Eddy believes studying covenants gives believers a better sense of God’s heart for how He shapes relationships. At his Covenantal Theology training at City Church on July 13, Dr. Eddy shared how we can improve our marriages by accurately viewing them as Kingdom-oriented covenants. Through that Kingdom-oriented lens, sex within a male-female marriage becomes the sign of the covenant. He urged church leaders to teach Kingdom Marriages, that put the Kingdom community and the imaging of the triune God at the center of it.
Last month 170 gathered in the Twin Cities for a stimulating and informative presentation on the global refugee crisis given by Matthew Soerens, author of the just-released book "Seeking Refuge on the Shores of the Refugee Crisis." Transform Minnesota and Arrive Ministries would like to help connect Christian faith communities with resources and empower the local church to serve our vulnerable refugee neighbors. Here we have included a few resources from the seminar which we know many church leaders and concerned Christians will find helpful.
After winning a Super Bowl ring with the Indianapolis Colts, then playing with the Cincinnati Bengals, former University of Minnesota Gopher football player Ben Utecht retired from the NFL when a routine training drill resulted in his fifth documented concussion. Utecht writes a new book chronicling his life as an athlete, how multiple sports-related traumatic brain injuries have resulted in severe memory loss, and how his Christian faith has been the anchor in his life, which continues to keep him strong and grounded as he looks toward an uncertain future.
Can you imagine if 50,000+ people inside US Bank Stadium were worshiping our Lord and King Jesus Christ? What if the 1 billion dollar football stadium was turned into a house of prayer for an entire weekend? That’s what Pulse wants to see for the UNITE National Day of Prayer in 2017 – to fill the US Bank stadium with youth lifting up the name of Jesus Christ. Pulse is casting this vision of hosting the largest youth event the state of Minnesota has ever known, but they need the partnership of hundreds of Minnesota pastoral teams. On September 29, 2016 pastoral teams are invited to US Bank Stadium's Hyundai Room to come together for lunch, prayer and worship in preparation for UNITE National Day of Prayer 2017 at US Bank Stadium.
Kimberly Stewart, Eagle Brook Church’s Executive Director of Development, taught a seminar on Engaging Financial Leaders in August 2016. She taught that, believe it or not, affluence is often a burden, and many with it are unsure of how to steward their wealth.
As we approach the 2016 Presidential election, we wanted to know how pastors are navigating the political season. We asked a number of pastors to contribute as guest authors; some wouldn't touch the topic with a 10 foot pole, others like Pastor Kory Kleinsasser, lead pastor at Waite Park Church agreed to write this thoughtful piece about transcending the political chaos. We are encouraged by Pastor Kory's message of rising above fear, division and cynicism, and putting our trust in God knowing Jesus taught us to transcend the petty arguments of the day and to take an eternal, divine perspective.
As we approach the 2016 Presidential election, we wanted to know how pastors are navigating the political season. Pastor Jeff Heidkamp, co-lead pastor of Mercy Vineyard Church writes about why he doesn’t think the Bible has anything to say about American “uppercase P” Politics, but has a lot to say about “lowercase p” politics. Pastor Jeff shares when he believes it is appropriate for a pastor to become partisan, and a practice he implements that helps him to gain empathy for those who see the world differently than he does.
For our Urban Church Planting blog series, we are posting a recent blog Rev. Efrem Smith, President and CEO of World Impact wrote about being thick-skinned urban missionaries. He writes about how being thick-skinned for the Kingdom of God can only come about through intimacy with God, identity in Christ, and the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Only out of the overflow of this dynamic relationship can urban missionaries be used to empower the poor, strengthen the church, and transform communities.
On September 8, Jean Johnson spoke at TCAMP on Avoiding Dependency in Missions. She wrote this article on a similar topic for the Fall 2016 Mission Frontiers issue. She writes the best way to plant indigenous churches and movements is to begin that way. Then, they don’t have to discover mid-stream that it is too late — that an unhealthy mindset has settled in like cement. Keep in mind that in every apple, there is an orchard. In every people group, an Acts 2-type church is already there; we just need to believe it.
As we approach the 2016 Presidential election, we wanted to know how pastors are navigating the political season. Carl Nelson, president and CEO of Transform Minnesota writes about his observations this election season; including the political diversity of American evangelicalism, and how he believes a Biblically-informed policy platform will be in conflict with both major parties. As God’s people, Carl believes we are called to be servants, not masters, and trust that the renewal of our culture is a result of transformed hearts, not elected officials.
Transform Minnesota is presenting Q Commons on Thursday October 13 at City Church in Minneapolis. The topic this session is “Engaging the Divide,” and will feature three local speakers who will discuss practical lessons for living in a pluralistic society. Each of these local speakers: Don Samuels, Rob Vischer, and Meghann Kantke will discuss pluralism: how Christians seek to live out their Christian values in a secular society.
Pulse has released new details about their upcoming UNITE worship events at US Bank Stadium. UNITE is gathering all churches, generations, and denominations together for two events that will have significant impact on the Twin Cities. The hope and prayer for PULSE’s two events is for revival and evangelism in America and in the Twin Cities. Nick Hall of Pulse and Rob Ketterling of River Valley Church liken the weekend of events in May to the Billy Graham Crusades and Promise Keepers held at the Metrodome.
As we approach the 2016 Presidential election, we wanted to know how pastors are navigating the political season. Dr. Matthew St. John, lead pastor of New Hope Church in New Hope writes about three truths he knows this election season: "God is in charge, and His say is final. I must respond to what my Spirit-shaped conscience dictates, and offer charity to those whose choices differ from mine. I must honor the candidate that is victorious, if only because my Lord, in His written revelation, has commanded me to do so."
We have a dream… that pastors of the Twin Cities would pursue racial harmony by exploring in depth our troubled past so we can move forward and fulfill our calling to oneness as the Body of Christ. Transform Minnesota is launching its first-ever Sankofa Journey to Harmony visiting Civil Rights sites in February 2017. Rev. Terrance Rollerson and Pastor Andy Gray, pastors at the The Urban Refuge Church in Minneapolis will be leading the Sankofa Journey to Harmony. Terrance and Andy went on the journey together in 2012 and 2016. Read about how this spiritual journey impacted their friendship and relationship as an African American man and White man in ministry together. Sankofa is an intentionally multi-ethnic, experiential, and spiritual journey that will take us to important places and moments in the Civil Rights movement where together we’ll mourn, learn, understand, repent, pray, and find hope to build bridges and stand in the gap as peacemakers.
As we are on the brink of one of the most controversial Presidential elections in recent history, we are seeing more and more division among Americans. In his Q Commons Minneapolis talk, Rob Vischer, Dean of the University of St. Thomas School of Law remarks on how the remedy for our polarized political culture is the restoration of relationships. Vischer encourages civil friendships that are lived out in a spirit of solidarity with one another; emphasizing that our political life is shaped not primarily by election results, but by the attitudes of citizens.
As we are on the brink of one of the most controversial Presidential elections in recent history, we are seeing more and more division among Americans. In her Q Commons Minneapolis talk Meghann Kantke, an attorney at Gray Plant Mooty in Minneapolis remarks on the value of expressing kindness and graciousness, while staying true to our convictions. She taught how the Jesus way is grace and truth – of real kindness and honest humility without compromising our convictions. We have to believe that everyone - even people we disagree with – are worthy of kindness and that they have something to teach us.
As we are on the brink of one of the most controversial Presidential elections in recent history, we are seeing more and more division among Americans. In his Q Commons Minneapolis talk Don Samuels, Minneapolis School Board member discusses Creating Kingdom Culture in Polarized Society: Leadership practices that place the values of Jesus ahead of American culture.
To adequately and powerfully love our Muslim neighbors, listen to the words Dick Brogden, of Live Dead, spoke at Cedar Valley Church on November 1, 2016.
The 2016 election is decided and Evangelical Christians bear great responsibility to stand with those who feel afraid and left out. Evangelicals are people who want to attract others to Jesus. Their decisive role in influencing this election for a candidate whose character contradicts so much of what Jesus stands for, creates a barrier to their witness of His Gospel, which now must be overcome.

Rev. Anne Vining, senior pastor at First Covenant Church St. Paul, shares her deep need during the holidays for the intentional spiritual practices in Advent. The season of Advent is this rather counter-cultural invitation to wait, and to courageously choose hope over fear and despair—regardless of the state of our world, because Emmanuel, God with us, has come and is coming again!
Transform Minnesota is working to inspire a missionary heart among Christians towards the nearly 200,000 Muslims that call Minnesota home. In spite of some negative reactions by Christians that have received a lot of media attention, we are encouraged by a growing movement of more and more evangelical Christians who are meeting, loving and serving their Muslim neighbors as the Gospel of Jesus would have us do.
“God wants to transform the lives of millions of people living in rural areas and small towns in the US, and he is using his church to do it,” said Pastor Paul Jorgensen, Lead Teaching Pastor at Cornerstone Church. Doing life and ministry in small towns and rural communities comes with many relational benefits and structural challenges. Of the hundreds of thousands of pastors and leaders ministering to rural communities and small towns, the isolation can be one of the hardest parts. We, at Transform Minnesota believe it is important for rural pastors to get refreshed and find a support network; that is why we are a sponsor of a new conference called Grow! It launches in March of 2017 aiming to equip and encourage rural pastors to not just survive, but become more effective in their strategic part of Kingdom of God.
A newly-launched Super Run 5k walk/run in Minneapolis is responding to the harsh reality of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation that is happening on our streets EVERY DAY - and as law enforcement prepares to see a surge in sex trafficking coming to our city on Super Bowl weekend 2018. Led by a group of churches, ministries, organizations and businesses, the Off the Streets Super Run is planned for the Saturday before Super Bowl LI in 2017 and Super Bowl LII in 2018, held in Minneapolis.
Quint and Rachel Alfors wanted to leave a legacy that outlasted their own lifetime. As the founders of our organization, Quint and Rachel Alfors encouraged giving at every turn; while Quint was President of GMAE he helped set-up a generous endowment for the future of our organization. The Alfors personally walked the talk, giving of their time and money, and they had the foresight to included Transform Minnesota in their planned giving. Even when times were tough, they modeled generosity in all stages of life; while working in ministry, in retirement, and while planning for a legacy after their own deaths. Through Quint and Rachel’s lifetime of ministry work and their generous financial contributions, the Alfors leave behind a Christ-honoring legacy at Transform Minnesota.
2017 brings a new year and with it a new President which some pro-lifers hope will usher in change to the landscape of abortion across our nation. Tammy Kocher, Executive Director of New Life Family Services writes about how being pro-life extends far beyond the polling place and laws created to protect life. Christians must address the social and economic barriers that lead women and men to abortion clinics. Being pro-life is about more than saving babies. It is also about raising children. Together, we need to work towards creating a culture where the Church supports life decisions, helps mothers and fathers build healthy relationships and families. And supports them in their practical struggles while nurturing their spiritual development.
As we celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, we encourage all evangelical Christians to reflect on the breadth of reforms in Christian teaching and practices that followed Luther’s bold actions. By nailing his 95 theses to the university door, Luther found himself leading a movement to reform the way Christians viewed salvation, scripture, and their relationship with God. Many of the beliefs and practices evangelicals revere in worship and prayer are a direct result of the Spirit-inspired revisions Martin Luther brought before the Roman Catholic Church in 1517.
Transform Minnesota calls upon President Trump to lift the ban on U.S. refugee admissions. The spirit of this Executive Order is based on fears that originate from incorrect facts about refugees, and is an action that runs contrary to our Christian moral imperative to shelter those fleeing violence and persecution. Among Transform Minnesota’s core values are the Sanctity of Life, Religious Freedom, and Mercy. These values, drawn from our evangelical faith and belief in the Bible, compel us to offer refuge to those who are suffering the most, to vigilantly defend each other’s religious freedom, and to protect the lives of refugees who are made in the image of God. We stand with refugees because God commands us to love, welcome and seek justice for refugees and other immigrants.

Pulse Movement announced a big change in their plan to fill US Bank Stadium this May with worship and outreach events. Rather than holding the revival and evangelism events in 2017, they are moving the Pulse Twin Cities events to 2018, the same year US Bank Stadium will host the Super Bowl. "We believe God is extending this season. I use the word extend because I think it’s significant, I could use the word delay. Delay means to make wait or to be slow. I’m using the word extend because extend means to cause to cover a larger area,” said Nick Hall, Pulse Founder and Chief Communicator. The new plan for 2017 is to host an outdoor prayer gathering outside US Bank Stadium on the National Day of Prayer on May 4, 2017. This prayer event kicks off a season saturated in prayer, outreach, and training that will culminate in May 2018. Hall and the Pulse leadership team are excited by the ways God is moving and will continue to move over the next 15 months of mobilizing and equipping the Church leading up to the May 2018 event.

In February, 2017 30 Twin Cities Pastors went on a Journey to Harmony, touring Civil Rights Sites in the South. A handful of these participants wrote up their reflections to share with the Body of Christ in Minnesota.
As we seek to understand how Christians are called to welcome the alien in our midst at our March 2, 2017 Standing with Refugees event; be confident in our country’s screening process, knowing that refugees are subject to the highest level of security checks of anybody who travels to the United States. But also put your confidence in God’s calling on our lives to remember our ancestors who were once foreigners (found as the Hebrew word GER in the Old Testament), and to show hospitality to the stranger (hospitality is a Greek compound word of phileo and xenia, meaning love of stranger found in the New Testament).

Included is a Q & A with some Grow Conference participants engaged in rural ministry in the Midwest.
Rev. Dr. Charles Gill reflects on his experience on the Sankofa journey, and how this trip violated the sanctity of his safe space. Sankofa is a Ghanaian phrase that translates as “go back and get it.” Our Journey to Harmony encouraged participants to go back and face our country’s roots in order to move forward.

God is moving at the Shakopee Women’s Prison in powerful ways. Prison Ministry volunteers can attest to it: "I believe God is creating a revival inside the Shakopee Women’s Prison." Estimates are that over 350 women have been baptized inside the prison since baptism services started being offered a few years back. But it’s not a one-time event. Volunteers from churches and evangelical ministries are a constant presence inside the prison walls, church attendance has sky-rocketed, and the Shakopee Women’s Prison is one of the first prisons in the world to allow a weekly Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) class inside for meetings. Evangelical prison ministry groups believe God has big plans for these inmates after they're released.

In April, 2017 we launched a series of forums called Transform Ideas; conversations to help Christians explore biblical perspectives on important cultural issues. The theme for our first Transform Ideas forum was the Timeless Call for Racial Harmony held on April 27, 2017 at Hope Community Church. Four local speakers addressed 225 audience members with ideas relating to both our nation's history of racism and our present day reality of racial disparities in the Twin Cities. Our hope for The Timeless Call for Racial Harmony is to help Christians explore how they can pursue racial harmony, help rebuild, repair and find redemption from America’s sin of racism.

There is no earthly justice that will bring back the life of Philando Castille. The world seeks justice as best it can, but even the world’s justice can’t turn back the clock and bring Castile back to life, or allow Officer Jeronimo Yanez to double check his instinctive reaction.

There is a growing movement within the local Christian Church for families to support foster care and love on vulnerable children. In large part, the trend is due to a growing realization that there are modern-day orphans living in Minnesota. Many advocates for vulnerable children in the Christian community believe the Church finally is heeding its call to care for orphans, by attempting to care for the 1,700 Minnesota children who are wards of the state. Read how some churches and faith-based organizations are working to tackle Minnesota's foster care crisis. Plus resources on how best to respond to this growing need.

As evangelical Christians in Minnesota we denounce the attack on Dar Al-Farooq Mosque in Bloomington and pray that the perpetrator will be quickly found and brought to justice. When one place of worship is attacked, all of our houses of worship are threatened. And so as evangelical Christians we stand with Minnesota Muslims to denounce this attack.
On July 19, 2017 Transform Minnesota hosted 140 people at Wooddale Church for a seminar called “Uncovering Hidden Shame,” offering resources and expertise on the slippery slope of sin that leads to prostitution, the spiritual dimension of treating sexual addiction, and why evangelical Christians need to develop a theology of healthy sexuality in church. As many churches work to ramp up anti-trafficking efforts, make your church a place of restoration and redemption. We believe churches should resource and help restore men and women involved in sexual addiction, prostitution and pornography.
In recent months I’ve had the opportunity to hear directly from leaders in churches about life in ministry. I’ve hosted listening sessions with small groups of diverse church leaders, I’ve been a part of conference planning teams and retreats with pastors from rural communities and cities across our state, and I’ve traveled with 30 pastors on a 4-day civil rights pilgrimage. As we interact with and serve leaders in our evangelical network, I am heartened to know personally the many leaders who make up our evangelical network in Minnesota. These Godly pastors have hearts that ooze with compassion for people who need Jesus, and they accurately recognize that Christians must emphasize our identity in Christ and unity of the Body to bridge societal divisions.
What we witnessed with Hurricane Harvey is a new breed of storm altogether. It was the most extreme rainfall event ever observed in the United States, that may prove to be the costliest natural disaster in our nation’s history. Meteorologist and Evangelical Environmental Network Board Chair Paul Douglas writes about the compelling evidence that the warming climate we’re experiencing could be turning up the volume of weather extremes. The pain, disruption and dislocation of a rapidly-changing climate will be felt most by the world’s poor. Douglas appeals to Christians to acknowledge our new climate reality as we have a spiritual obligation to pay attention and to care for the least of these. Hear more from Paul Douglas at Transform Ideas: Creation Care on Thursday, September 28 (7-9pm) at Elim Church, Minneapolis.

How the Church Can Respond to the Nations at Our Doorsteps? “When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner among you must be treated as your native-born.” (Lev. 19:33) Arrive Ministries Executive Director Bob Oehrig offers some loving ways of how individual Christ-followers and our congregations can respond to our new neighbors, as such groups as Burmese, Iraqis, Ethiopians, Nepalese, Somalis and Liberians now join our children in schools and in our communities. While we have seen a lot of support for refugees from evangelical grassroots and national leaders in recent months, others are asking important questions about the safety of refugees coming to America. We encourage you to use the following information to talk with fellow Christians about the real fears that some people have. It's important to our Gospel witness that Christians are seen as people motivated by the Bible and credible information.

For a post-abortive woman, simply hearing the word ‘abortion’ in church can be unnerving. However, not hearing abortion discussed in church can also create shame, further stigmatizing and validating a desire to keep a past abortion hidden rather than to seek healing. In a recent study, forty-three percent of women were regularly attending a church at the time of their abortion. This puts the Church in a difficult situation. How is the Church called to talk about the sanctity of human life, without ostracizing and further condemning the men and women who have been through an abortion experience?

“Typically people want to engage this trafficking problem in a really visibly meaningful way. They want to give themselves something to assess, report, measure, like recovering victims or mentoring victims. The problem with that thinking is that it generally means people want to be involved in the knee-deep place of pulling victims out of sex trafficking. Think about how impractical most of that work is for the majority of people," said Sgt. Grant Snyder of the Minneapolis Police Department’s Human Trafficking task force. Sgt. Snyder shared some assessment tools in how to best help in anti-trafficking efforts, including the importance of prayer and prevention work.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions' comments regarding immigrant families, and his citation of Romans 13:1 as the basis for obedience to the laws of the State, represent a deep misunderstanding and misapplication of the relationship between the Church and the State that is consistent with the misunderstanding of Romans 13 that has long plagued the Church. The Christendom interpretation of Romans 13 has warped our view of the relationship between the Church and State. The New Testament shows little interest in proper statecraft; rather, the New Testament shows concern for how the Church will witness to Christ. As a Church in these challenging times, we are going to need a much deeper and more reflective understanding of the many ways we have been made a pawn of East of Eden powers, and untangle ourselves from these misunderstandings that have done so much damage to our witness, and to our ability to live out the heart of God in the world.
Good planning is only part of moving a church forward, plans have to be executed. A lead pastor must keep a finger on the pulse of the church to ensure movement is happening. In larger churches, this can be delegated through staff; in smaller churches, the pastor typically has to be that point person to keep things progressing. Read five areas that require leadership and attention from the lead pastor to help move plans to action.

Rev. David Myles writes about the story of the three Hebrew boys (in Daniel 3) standing up to what they considered wrong in the face of the nationalistic, popular beliefs and practices. Rev. Myles likens the Hebrew boys' refusal to bow and worship the golden image King Nebuchadnezzar set up, to NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem. In the future, under a new national leader, Rev. Myles warns it could be Christians' religious fidelity and liberty that is being challenged based on similar arguments. "Is it possible that what you are supporting today will be used against you in the future in a similar or same manner?" "It might not only be kneeling in protest, but also kneeling in prayer that will be called into question," Rev. Myles argues.

Sondra Samuels writes about how she believes pastors need to be sharing a more relevant message about Jesus’ life, death and resurrection that will resonate with teenagers. As teenagers in her life and work increasingly deal with anxiety and isolation, her hope is that pastors will teach how Jesus' life and message of love, power and hope can address all that is going on in their lives. Samuels is the President and CEO of the Northside Achievement Zone, working to end the achievement gap in North Minneapolis.
In-group bias in Christianity is all too normal. Dr. Ruben Rivera taught at the second Dismantling Racism training at Wooddale Church on March 21, 2018 on how Christians are often regularly, however subconsciously bias. Dr. Rivera taught about the dangers of making our view of Jesus captive to our in-group culture. Dr. Rivera showed how Jesus blew up in-group/out-group bias, and continues to empower His followers to take in-group love and give it to the out-group.
"I have always known that Klansmen were terrorists. I could easily identify their distinctive dress (white robes) and their symbol of terror (the cross). But sometimes the things you know fail to really hit home. It was not until I was face to face with those symbols at a museum in Birmingham, AL that I saw the true tragedy and tasted the true terror," writes Pastor Jason Meyer, while reflecting on his 2019 Sankofa Journey.
"I was eager to find my place in history. Would I have had the bravery to march with Dr. King? Could I have been counted among those who sat bravely at Woolworth’s to protest the immorality of segregation?... (Later) I found myself in Birmingham, standing on the wrong side of love–and history," writes Pastor Mike Tong, while reflecting on his 2019 Sankofa Journey.
“To assume I would have done differently is the height of arrogance or ignorance. The fact is that most of us are simply products of our culture and society, not independent actors. Most people simply will not act counter to our cultural environment. People do not think alone,” wrote Pastor Kory Kleinsasser, while reflecting on his 2019 Sankofa Journey.
“Several of the stops on our journey brought about an eerie, spiritual connection to my ancestors which was initially unsettling. As we continued, this sensation shifted from eeriness to empowerment as it gave me confidence that the strength of my people who endured these hardships still has the power to be a catalyst for true reflection,” wrote Elder Kyle Jeter, while reflecting on his 2019 Sankofa Journey.

"Pastors, we need to recognize the importance of soul care in our own lives. If our souls are depleted and dry, chaotic and overwhelmed, this internal state will undoubtedly spill out upon all we encounter," writes Dr. Christine Osgood. In order for the soul to be well, Dr. Osgood suggests we need to care for and invest in six interrelated dimensions: your body (physical), your thoughts (cognitive), your feelings (emotional), the people (relational) you consistently engage, your calling, mission or purpose (meaning), and your spirit (spiritual).
"Sabbath is the only one of the Ten Commandments that we brush off as not really that important. But it’s the longest and most descriptive commandment, the hinge words between how we relate to God and how we relate to each other. It’s not a throw-away comment. One day in seven, God says, you stop all work, because you are not to be defined by your output. You are all simply and completely human beings, alongside one another, all beloved children of God," writes Rev. Kara Root, Lead Pastor at Lake Nokomis Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis.
In the overall life and ministry of a church, the gift of a pastoral sabbatical is a relatively small thing, and yet the benefits it reaps are abundant and lasting. Rev. Christian Ruch writes about who all benefits from a pastoral sabbatical.
"Ministry is demanding. Serving the Lord and others can be like a roller coaster with its ups and downs. Therefore, prioritizing personal time weekly and extended time seasonally to unplug from the demands for some personal soul care is not only important, but a necessity," writes Bill Goodwin.
